The Dangerous Goods Stores Unit (DGSU) was established under the University Safety Office on 1 February 2000. The major aim of this unit is to organize the central supply of common dangerous goods for the users of the University. There are 75 dangerous goods stores under the University Safety Office (as at Jan 2025), of which 65 stores locating in the University campus are operated by this Unit. The Unit reports to the DG Manager on operational matters, and on policy matters will be supervised by Safety Advisory Committee – Chemicals / Carcinogens under the Committee on Safety. According to the prevailing policy, certain dangerous goods
need to be ordered through the Dangerous Goods Stores Unit, and by means of the services, laboratory users of the University can minimize the stock of dangerous goods in their laboratories.
The services provided by the Unit can be accessed online via the Dangerous Goods Service Portal (DGSP).
The storage and use of dangerous goods are governed by the Dangerous Goods Ordinance Cap.295. Anyone possess of listed dangerous goods in amount and packing more than exempted is in breach of the Law. To allow the use of such goods in the University, the University Safety Office set up dangerous goods stores and apply corresponding licenses for those listed dangerous goods to be used in the University laboratories. Moreover, the Ordinance also require licensed vehicles for the conveyance of Class 2 and Class 3 dangerous goods on road.
All dangerous goods store, use, and conveyance licences were issued by the Fire Services Department, and are renewed annually after the inspection by this department for compliance.
